History of Grammatical Theories in Kannada - Profeatory Note

PREFATORY NOTE

History of Grammatical Theories in Kannada' forms the report of J.S. Kulli when he was a Senior Fellow of the International School of Dravidian Linguistics in the year 1980-81.

J.S. Kulli's premature death on 29th December 1982 had cast up on us the moral duty to publish the report early, The financial shortage and the slow sales of the publications were the reasons which prevented us, even though, we wanted to bring-out the work much earlier.

J.S. Kulli was sincere to his assignment, whether it is a Senior Fellowship or the Secretaryship of the Conference held in Dharwad or of the DLA which he undertook later and did his best in the allotted work. His loyalty to his teachers especially to R.C. Hiremath remained steadfast till his death. More are his professional qualities: But the prefatory note is not the place to recall.

The report gives a full picture of the development of the grammatical thinking on the parts of speech of Kannada. The growth and development of grammatical segments based on traditional grammars were once considered to be sufficient material for a history of a language. Now this view has entirely changed: yet, the usability of information from grammars for the history of Kannada and for comparison with other Dravidian languages is enormous. Those who suffer from the disability of reading the Kannada Grammars in their original form have an impeccable opportunity of understanding the development of the segments of Kannada Grammar through this work.

J.S. Kulli has compared the Kannada forms occasionally with those of Tamil and Telegu. These are welcome features in this work. The enormous amount of labour that has been put forth by the author needs to be recorded here.
